Preparing Garlic Bed for 2011 crop.
28 September 2010 Preparing garlic bed. 28 September 2010 Preparing garlic bed.
A garlic bed was prepared for planting about the 20 of October to allow the garlic to overwinter. It is a raised bed 8 feet by 8 feet, which will contain over 200 cloves. The area can be a wet, so the raised bed is prudent. Fertilizer was compost, a bit of peat moss all worked into the underlying soil. The bed will settle for about three weeks then the cloves will be planted.Durgan

How much?
If you do square foot gardening, how many cloves do you plant per square? How much garlic does it produce for you? We are a family of 4-5, depending on ds coming home from college. Would that be enough for us? I was thinking of planting myself and I knew the season was coming quickly.

I plant the cloves at five or six inch center spacing with the top of the clove about two inches from the soil surface. After the top of the ground freezes the surface is covered with wood chip mulch to a depth of about three inches. The shoots will come up through the mulch with no problem in the Spring.
Eight square feet will contain over 100 cloves, which is a lot of garlic. In 2010 I had about 84 perfect bulbs.
Each clove produces about a fifth of a pound, or five bulbs to the pound.

I'm waiting for my garlic to come in, as well as the asparagus crowns. We have a bunch more garlic ready to go into the bed. The weather has been so weird, my neighbors lilacs are blooming!?!
