Building a Greenhouse
5 November 2010 Greenhouse on Deck. 5 November 2010 Greenhouse on Deck.
I decided to build a large greenhouse on the deck, which doesn’t get much use. The enclosure will be a sun room if appropriate, instead of the canvas structure that use to be there. I have a small 5000 BTU heater that connects to the barbecue natural gas outlet, so will have some warmth, and will get some use during the Winter months. It took nine days to build by myself, about 72 hours of labor, from 28 of October to 5 November, and cost $1798.63.
Description of the construction. Six, 6 by 6 pillars support the structure. The auxiliary supports are all 2 by 6 spruce planks. Two doors were installed plus a window to ensure reasonably good ventilation. I got the doors free of charge. The slope of the roof is from 8 feet to 7 feet, with a pitch of 1 in 12. Sun is available for about two third of the structure all day. Wood was used to cover the walls where no Sun penetrates. Corrugated SUNTUF UV protected panels was used. It is relatively low cost compared to other coverings, and is almost indestructible. Pictures depict highlights of the method used. Plans were in my head.Durgan

I'm with Neena (who looks quite comfortable in her fuller fur) who gives the new structure her seal of approval, you always know how to do it right. That is going to be a great place to spend some time planning future gardens.

Me and hubby were thinking about building one, now I've made up my mind and it's an absolute yes.
"Many more people could ride out the storm-tossed waves in their economic lives if they had their . . . supply of food . . . and were debt-free. Today we find that many have followed this counsel in reverse: they have at least a year’s supply of debt and are food-free."-Thomas S. Monson

Awesome looking Greenhouse!
Got to ask, will the Suntuf yellow over time? It certainly does a good job of letting light in.total debt: $23977.09 updated 04/02/11

Suntuf does not yellow. I have the same material for my utility shed roof. This means I have light, and the Suntuf lasts as long as shingles. I have used it for about 12 years, but moved from where I build my last greenhouse. The old greenhouse is still functioning about a 100 miles from where I now live.

When the greenhouse structure was fully enclosed, Neena would walk around and never through the doors, when I called her.. It was necessary to carry her in and close the doors. Now she is comfortable with the structure and runs through if both doors are open. She sure was suspicious of this new monster on the deck.

I put two tables in place today, and will prepare it for planting various produce. It was around O degrees C today, and the Sun was shining, and it was necessary to open the doors to keep the temperature down later in the day.
Later this week or so, I will carefully monitor the temperature at night with a bit of natural gas heat. I have an open burner at the present time, since my ventless natural gas heater hasn't arrived yet.Durgan
