Making Luffa Soap Cakes
21 November 2010 Making Luffa Soap Cakes. 21 November 2010 Making Luffa Soap Cakes.
Experimental luffa soap cakes were made today. Pictures depict the process.
Ingredients are glycerin soap, isopropyl alcohol, dye, luffa, and various molds. Spraying the luffa with alcohol assists in binding the soap to the luffa. The ingredients are usually available in a craft store. I got mine at Michaels Crafts. Molds can be anything suitable. The process is simple, and only takes a short time.Durgan

I have made those and love them!!
I don't do the 'lye thing' though........just buy the huge bars.........I used a loaf pan to put the luffa in...........they are truly easy and wonderful to use.
If you are planning on giving them for gifts, the people will love them. I gave them as part of Xmas one year and they were very much appreciated...........
after I explained what they were!

Luffa Soap Cakes. Rectangular Mold.
22 November 2010 Luffa Soap Cakes. Rectangular Mold. 22 November 2010 Luffa Soap Cakes. Rectangular Mold
The mold is a drawer organizer from the Dollar Store. It appears to be excellent for forming rectangular shaped luffa soap cakes, and is very easy to work with. Slicing is relatively easy, since the flat surface doesn’t roll when cutting to size.Durgan

And the rectangular ones would be easier to hold in the shower too........round soap is not my preference.
Thanks for sharing!

That rectangular mold reminds me of a sushi mold.
Do the small pieces of luffa stay together and not shed as the soap disolves? Just concerned about drains clogging.~*Darlene*~

the ones i did shed a little bit but really not that much. And the little bit of luffah left after the soap was used up, I cleaned and redid in another bar of soap for myself. The kids one they kept the little round of leftover luffah to use when they have to scrub the tub. It holds up pretty well.
I like the idea of the rectangular mold (and another idea to use a loaf pan)
You know... the more i think about the project, Durgan, the more I wanna get my supplies out and try it again! Thanks for the inspiration!Last edited by Missy; 11-22-2010 at 05:05 PM.

The fiber is very strong, and is tightly held together. I have used the plain scrubber type in he tub for about two years with little deterioration.
The soap type is new to me. I use one for washing my hands and am really looking forward to determine just how well it withstands this type of use.Durgan

Great news. They really are a nice thing and would make a lovely gift, the jewel tones of the soap are just so pretty.
