Russ I have had really good luck with the 2ft x 8 ft beds for tomatoes..I put a big boy tomato on each end of these beds and plant low growing plants in the middle..At the other place I had 2ft squares for tomatoes..I would change them out everyother year and plant something else in that bed and move to tomatoes into a different bed..I also grew cherry tomatoes this way for juice..out of 6 plants I would put over 100 qt up every year...but then I had over 20 beds..I liked not having so many weeds to pull..and had them set far enough apart that I could mow between them to keep it looking neat..

I did the same and had good luck with the tomatoes as well. I plant so many each yr. that in order to fit them all I have to do raised beds and modified square foot gardening with them ( ie way too many in one space...lol) .

I do mostly the smaller versions ( cherry, grape, roma, paste, Amish, heirloom Italian and do mix in some large heirloom , zebra etc) I put the cages in right away and do a trellis on the side of one bed as I have 6 ft vines that go up it with some heirloom grape tomatoes . In most of the beds I have a soaker hoses winding through the bed and all works out perfect. They grow hardy, pest free ( I do plant marigolds on side). A little hard to pick but for the amount I grow and process each yr. well worth. Also no weeds.
