    Default Garlic Bed

9 April 2011 Garlic Bed 9 April 2011 Garlic Bed
The garlic bed was planted on 9 October 2010. All 196 cloves survived the Winter well, and growth has commenced.
The mulch will be left in situ to maintain a constant moisture. Garlic takes no care, except maybe add a little water if the
Summer is dry. The scapes will be removed and utilized when they form. Harvest will be in July.

Looks good! I'm hoping to get some garlic planted this fall. It's hard to fit all my wants into our postage stamp yard though...

I use alot of garlic through the winter and the 50 cloves I plant each fall gets me through the year.It is amazing just how small the area is that grow these. The trick is nice loose soil, and hardneck garlic is an excellent keeper.

Garlic takes little room, and the cloves can be planted on the margin of flower beds. So easy to grow!

Very good to know Chowder and Durgan - I will def. be trying it out this fall. Maybe along the side of the fence between our yard and the neighbors...I can have that ready by fall.

Looking good! How big is your garlic bed (4'x4'?) & what do you grow on the outside perimeter?

I finally got around to planting a 2'x10' garlic and shallot bed last fall. I'm working on seedlings for garlic chives and scallions. Don't have enough for the cooking I do. Can't wait to harvest chive buds this year! It's all so exciting!

Garlic bed is 8 feet square. About 200 cloves. I plant almost anything outside the bed. Corn, tomatoes, and swiss chard, and cucumbers on a trellis last year.
