Planting Potatoes
30 April 2011 Planting Potatoes 30 April 2011 Planting Potatoes
Four rows of potatoes were planted, fourteen tubers per row for a total of 56 potatoes. Cultivars are Purple Viking, Green Mountain, All Red, Pacific Russet. These are all seed potatoes from Eagle Creek. The in row spacing is 20 inches, and the depth is about 4 inches. Row spacing is 24 inches. These types are all new to my garden. I expect around four pounds or more per plant average, for a total harvest of around two hundred pounds.Durgan

That's a lot of 'taters!
Mine went in a few weeks ago and came up this week after the heavy rain we had. They are the hardware store "seed potato" variety. Some kind of red one. We had a pretty good crop of them last year.Use it up, Wear it out,

I read so much about planting potatoes, and all the conflicting theories and advice had my head spinning. Ended up planting them yesterday in rows around 10" apart and 3" deep -- maybe a little too close, but I was blissful in the endeavor. Planted Red Norland and Kennebec, both seed potatoes developed specifically to grow here in SD.

I am going to plant 1 or 2 seed sweet potatoes in a 1/2 barrel container. It is just me, so that should be plenty! I am keeping my eye out for dirt now that I got my containers.

This year I am planting Purple Magesty, Colorado Rose, and Kennebec. I won't be getting mine in the ground just yet, but soon. I plan on trying a few methods and in a few different areas of the garden and seeing what happens.

I planted white Kennebec back in February. Dug up the first new ones the other day. Due to all the rain they're a bit more watery than they'll be after a good dry spell, but they were still good. There's ablsolutely nothing better than a just dug homegrown potato!

I have grown Red Norland and Kennebec both are acceptable. Each plant should have about a square foot of root space for growing, but this is not critical. You should be just fine. I strive for maximum size and a weight in excess of 4 pounds per plant, by insuring adequate moisture is present, during the growth cycle.
