Shoot the deer. Double win - Meat for the winter and saves your melons.

Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

Take a 3 ft length of fence (chicken wire) and form it into a tunnel shape and place it over the plant. That will last a little while.

Shooting deer not an option! Sorry Greebo! Umm.. fencing, tried that, melons grow out of fence. But that did give me idea, maybe I could caged each melon. They only seem to eat them right before harvest time!! Any other suggestions??

I had deer sleeping in my mulch every night. The only thing that stopped them...putting dog doo around. Icky but works.

You can cage the ones you want to keep from them, but what I do is take ivory soap, put it in an old kneehigh panty hose and tie the pantyhose to a stick (you don't need a huge piece of soap, but you may need to replace as needed) stick the stick into the ground near the crop. The smell seems to keep them away. and the soap in not-too-crazy amounts doesn't hurt the garden, even seems to repell some other bugs as well. Just a thought.

If shooting deer isn't an option, why are their deer processing companies?

Deer sausage = yummy! And deer jerky is THE BEST.

    Ditto on the soap tip.

I don't know if it'd actually help, but can you get out there and mark your territory? Whiz around the watermelon patch.

I'm a vegetarian so...no deer meat for me. But more importantly I don't think I could ever kill anything. But Greebo, you enjoy yours, it is my understanding venison is one of the best meats, nutritionally speaking. It is very popular here in south GA. I have had it several times when I was a meat eater, but just fruits & veggies now.
