    Default City Compost

6 May 2011 City Compost 6 May 2011 City Compost

The City of Brantford supplies free of charge vegetative compost during the month of May. Two garbage cans are permitted daily, about half a cubic yard. I pick up daily and store in my yard until it is applied to the garden areas in the Fall. This is essentially all the fertilizer used, and it is quite adequate for optimum plant growth.

Our town has a "leaf dump" where you dump leaves. You can, anytime, pick up some semi-composted leaves. But they bury them after the pile gets too big and then start again. The trick is to get them while they're 1/2 composted and before they're gone!

They have leaf and brush dump here too. They grind the brush for mulch. If you live in the city or buy a tag you can go load up on it for free. I hear that at certain points it stops being mulch and progresses on to compost.

I'll be getting two carloads tomorrow.

The small town close to us does that, too. And they were most kind to tell me that I probably didn't want any on the last trip. Some moron had a bunch of poison ivy in their brush, brought it in and it was being ground up before someone recognized it.

There is a small cattle farm next to the recycle center, so the compost has manure. They also tell you if it's hot or ready to be used.

Since there are so many rural people (we're allowed to burn trash), whenever there is a burn ban, the dump is free. Pretty progressive for such a little town.
