    Default Yukon Gold Potatoes

8 May 2011 Yukon Gold Potatoes 8 May 2011 Yukon Gold Potatoes

Six Yukon gold potatoes were planted in a trench 8 feet by 1 foot wide. They will be carefully attended during the growing season to ascertain the potatoes by weight, that can be obtained from an area, allowing about a square foot for each plant.

I hope you have good luck with them!

I probably won't plant them again as I get a better yield with other varieties in my neck of the woods.

What you get by weight? Quality and size is also important. There is little information on the Internet about production by weight.

I have been weighing over the last three years and get form 4 to 8 pounds per plant from various types. I now consider four pounds to be acceptable, and anything over this weight to be approaching optimum.

Bear in mind there are many variable, moisture at the right time appears to be a major variable in my limited experience.

Oh boy, I didn't weigh, I just went by number of spuds and size. I seem to remember that I averaged one large, one medium or two small ones per plant. Definitely didn't get 4# per plant. But they were nice smooth potatoes and good quality.

From what little I know about them, this is the reason why they are more expensive in the grocery store - Not many eyes per seed potato and lower yields.

Edited to add: The year I grew them, it wasn't the best overall gardening year, either. I still had probably twice the yield or better on Kennebecs and Pontiacs, though. Everyone here had crappy gardens despite our efforts.
