Cucumbers are started indoors about 4 to 5 weeks before transplanting in the outdoor garden. This is far more advantageous than direct seeding, since the cucumbers get an early start, and germination is assured. The seeds germinate in three to five days if the temperature is about 25C and the soil is quite damp. I only grow Cross Country (hybrid), which has a nice rich green color, is prolific, which can be used for pickling or slicing. Cucumbers can withstand almost no frost. When planting the contents of the pot are planted in one hill to limit root disturbance. Three or four plants in a clump appears to have no detrimental effect on fruit production.
