    Default This year, gardening is spendy ...

    I am reassuring myself that next year, we'll reuse a lot of the garden supplies that we bought this season:

    * large tomato cages.
    * composter
    * replacement Walls O Water.
    * rabbit-thwarting fencing
    * quick-connects for the hoses
    * plant hormones (superthrive and blossom set)

    We're reusing last year's hoses, small tomato cages, and watering timers. Last year, DH put soaker hoses under weed barrier, and put the whole thing on a timer. We had a wonderful crop of tomatoes.

    Instead of sprinklers, we put in yard hydrants a couple of years ago. For us, it was a great decision -- it gives us a lot of flexibility.

    Tonight, the plants look happy:

    Me TOO
    -2 new mini greenhouses $23. each.
    -seedlings $50ish
    -lots of soil for container gardening-$40.
    -many garage sale pots
    a few hand tools
    a new shovel
    new a new sprayer as it just disintigrated in my hand/got new hoses last year
    And nothing is planted in the actual garden because of RAIN constant heavy rain. Just a touch frustrated.
    Chives are doing well and lettuce.

    It's been spendy for us this year, too:
    ~at least $250 on dirt
    ~maybe $50 worth of lumber for the garden fence
    ~$20 on gate hardware
    ~$40 for two hoses and a Y connector
    ~$20 for mini-greenhouse
    ~$300 or so for two new Aerogardens and accessories
    ~$35 for mushroom kit and four seed packets
    ~probably another $15 for seed bought locally
    ~maybe another $10 for seeds from eBay
    ~$20 for apple tree
    ~$12 for strawberry plants
    ~$8 for currant bush
    ~$21 for mulch
    ~$6 for bleeding heart bush
    ~$22 for a lattice panel to screen the storage area under the deck next to the garden

    I'm sure there was more that I've forgotten about. We're thinking long-term or we wouldn't have bought some of the big-ticket items.

    On the bright side, we used a LOT of stuff that's been hanging around doing nothing for us for years, like concrete blocks from our old single-wide trailer we had when we first moved onto this property, some scrap lumber, rabbit fencing, 2x4s, wood and metal fence posts, 1x2s, various items for trellis materials, the old raccoon-chewed deck box for storing garden tools, etc. So as expensive as it's been, it could have been much, much worse. But now we should be all set for years to come, except for seeds and annuals, of course.

    In spite of the cost, we're very happy how it's all turned out.

    Not too bad here this year.

    Bought four seedlings - $2.50
    Gas for the tiller about $10
    I used seeds leftover from last year and they are doing great!
