Monarch Butterfly
5 June 2011Monarch Butterfly 5 June 2011 Monarch Butterfly
On my daily walk an almost dead Monarch Butterfly was found. This is the first Monarch seen this year. Milkweed is grown in my garden in an attempt to attract this interesting insect.Durgan

Aww, they are so beautiful. A vibrant mosaic, little panes of beauty for all who take the time to look and see. Sorry the one you shared wasn't in the best of health. Reminds me of a baby fledgling Pheobe that was in distress today and we had to move it from an area we were wood working in (hauling next years firewood, busy weekend but we finished!!!) I guess it was trying to fly had probs but happy to say the parents came back and tended to their fledgling and all is right with the world.
Thanks for sharing Durgan.~*Darlene*~

Beautiful creatures...........all of them!
If you ever get a chance to go to Calif. where they winter--go!!-- it is a great experience.

Since you say the Monarch you saw was on its last leg and since you have milk weed, be on the look out for the next generation of monarch.
Seriously, milk weed is the nursery for monarchs and adult butterflies die after laying eggs so keep and eye out for caterpillars and crystalists.

Are they now on endangered species? Saw only 1 last summer & it was a celebration.

"Although in North America the Monarch Butterflies are not considered an “endangered” or “threatened” species, they are highly protected under law, especially around their wintering roosting sites."

?? Never thought they were even rare to see. I've already seen well over a hundred this year. I guess we're right on their summer migration route though.
