Blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum)
21 July 2011 Blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum) Picking and processing. 21 July 2011 Blackcurrant(Ribes nigrum)
There is one blackcurrant bush in the garden. It produced about four liters of fine berries. Juice was made covering with water, boiling for about 20 minutes and beating into a mash using the portable blender and straining. The juice is pressure canned for long term storage at room temperature. I use 15 minutes at 12 PSI.Durgan

Wow! How old is that bush?
I have a poor old black currant that has been living in the same pot (with soil changes) for 8 years since my divorce. Do you think it's too late to plant it out (I'm in NW Pennsylvania, probably zone 5, maybe 6). How much will it spread?

My black currant was about the same size as yours when first planted. The currant bushes grow fast, and need yearly pruning. Mine is about five feet in diameter and about five feet tall this year. Ir would be twice that size if it wasn't pruned each year. Every year the bush has more than enough berries for my needs about 15 or so quarts.
