Thornless Blackberry

Seven pounds of berries were picked from these two thornless blackberry plants in their third year, and the first year of production. The berries ripen over a three week period. Quality is excellent. All the berries have a slight tart taste. This depends on the degree of ripeness. If the berry is fully ripe, determined by it falling off the stem when touched, the berry will be sweet with almost no tart taste.

Many blackberries are available, so juice is being made of the excess. A container of four cups of berries is filled with water, placed in a pot on the stove and gently boiled for about 20 minutes, with periodic mashing. The cooked mash is then run through a fine mesh screen. The finished product is of fine quality and nothing added. Pure!Durgan

Yes I will, thank you for that advice. I think after seeing yours that I planted mine in a bad area. Well I'll keep them pruned. I put them in a bare area next to my porch. I have up two trellises to let them climb. I guess I can have worse problems than lots of blackberries.

The juice is probably the best of my collection. The juice is rich tasting, beautiful colour and would be an excellent drink to accompany a festive meal. I didn't have very many berries this year so ate the few fresh. Next year I will make most into juice, assuming I get a good crop.
The first plants I selected were bare root and were lousy, so I dug them up and bought new plants in pots from a nursery. If I give a plants away, I dig a good shoot and place in a gallon pot and let them start growing before delivering. There are always plenty of good shoots around a thriving plant. I suppose one could also take a cutting and plant it in a pot, with good soil and keep well watered until growth commences.Durgan
