Default questions on planting cherry tomato plants and others..

i have a huge picture window that with a stand high enough so the sun shines on the plants would work wonderfully for the plants to get enough sun....do you think it's possible to grow some cherry tomatoes inside or will the plants get yucky and attract fruit flies etc....and how big would the pot need to be....and how deep for the soil...i would love to try this with the cherry tomatoes and cucumbers just to see how it grows....is there anything else that could be planted that would be successful....

    thank you for your help!

If you can get enough natural light, you should be able to grow tomatoes just fine.

We grow ours in AeroGardens (hydroponic self-contained system) because we don't get enough light here in winter. We have fresh tomatoes all winter long.

It's best to get a variety that is smaller, and/or prune so it doesn't get out of control. I would think any kind of patio tomato variety would work.

Don't forget to fertilize with Miracle Grow or something.

I'm still in the experimental stages with indoor gardening myself, particularly dirt gardening, but there's a wide variety of stuff you can grow. Just start experimenting! Seeds aren't very expensive if you have them on hand for outdoor gardening anyway. Try a few different things and see what happens, and keep a notebook so you know what worked or didn't. Herbs are usually easy to grow. You can try stuff like spinach and lettuce in a fairly shallow tray. I use old refrigerator trays for our indoor gardens because they're sturdy and come in nice sizes and they're free at our recycling place. Obviously root crops like radishes will need to be a little deeper.

You will have to pollinate your tomatoes to get them to produce, since there aren't any bugs in the house to do that for you. I simply shake mine every day. It only takes a second and works great.

You can also grow peppers inside. I pollinate with a fingertip by just touching the middle of each blossom.

I haven't had problems with bugs on the tomatoes, but I did have to trash two other AGs with gorgeous flowers and peppers in them this year due to bugs. They came in on some peppers we had outside season before last and I'm still fighting to get them out of the house for good. I am not happy, especially about the peppers since they were just starting to produce.

There's a lot of info on indoor gardening if you want to Google that. I'm envious of anyone with a window that's sunny enough in winter to grow stuff. Good luck!

Lettuce is easy to grow, usually, and you'll know fairly soon if it's going to work under the conditions you have.

I don't know if you've had leaf lettuce from the garden before. I've found it's best to pick it, wash it, and then chill it in the fridge for a while. Otherwise, it's not very crisp.
