Saw a similar post for green onions/scallions. Put the root end in a glass of water and get a second set of onions!

I bought celery today - they never sell it here so it was the first celery I've seen at the supermarket since September. I bought two of them and I'm definitely going to give this a try!!

I planted mine and am still waiting for results.

I put the scallions in water. The one that had NO green on it has not done anything. The one with about an inch of green on it is definitely growing some new shoots. I'm wondering if i could just plant the scallion tips in dirt and then just harvest the tops. Not sure how many times I could do that before the plant would be exhausted.

You can do that with the green onions you buy in the store with bulb ends on them. We did that last season and they are still growing!

That is where I got mine. I totally forgot about them re-growing until I had tossed them into the compost bin, so I had to fish them out again!

Just keep cutting what you need and leave the bulb part in the ground. Similar to what you do with lettuce just cut what you need and leave the rest to keep growing.

I've never done it, but I know here in Fl, that people ask for the pineapple tops from the supermarkets that cut them up for fruit salads and grow pineapples from them too. Of course, warmer climate areas would be a "must" for doing it though.

Okay, if you all like recycling vegetalbes, here's another one for you!!!

If you take a head of cabbage in the late fall or winter and use it, leave the core intact with the stem end. Wrap it loosely in plastic and leave it in the fridge....guess what! It grows new leaves!

I'm supposing that if you planted it instead of throwing it away, it would regrow cabbage.

Also, those of you recycling onion bulbs, onions are biennial. It takes two years to grow a seed head. If you let your onion top go to seed you can take the seedhead at the end of the season and dry it out. It has tons of seeds in that bloom. They will sprout the following spring.

I just planted mine saved from last fall. They came up and it isn't even spring yet.

Other biennials are cabbage, carrot, collards, and mustard type greens. I think bok choy is a biennial because I planted last fall and it survived the winter. As soon as it got up to the low 80's it sent up a flower stalk.

The seeds on these are the little pods on the sides of the stem. Wait until the blooms are all gone and the stalk starts to turn yellowish brown. Harvest the seeds like you shell peas.
