And yet our government has said they are safe for human consumption...I guess the Nanny State doesn't always know best? I'm for letting people make their own decisions on what they will and will not consume. That said, I feel a million times better when I don't eat sugar or artificial sweeteners.

When I was a kid, if you didn't like fat people, you could just come right out say "Lol, you're FAT! Fatty fattykins!"
Now you have to pretend like you care about their well being and health care costs and crap. Sometimes I would rather someone just point and laugh at me rather than make up a bunch of nonsense about how I'm destroying civilization.~Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.~

I tend to agree. It was socially unacceptable to be fat when I was growing up, and fat people were few and far between. But I also think there are many other factors besides being politically correct that have contributed to this problem. We didn't eat at restaurants all the time, we didn't "super-size" our foods, we ate much less processed foods, we didn't sit in front of computers for hours at a time, etc.

About 40 years or more ago, when listening to the radio this was the essence of the conversation. An old female doctor was talking at the end of her medical career.
Question: "What do you consider the biggest advance in medicine?"
Doctor, "Antibiotics beyond a doubt. We had nothing until antibiotics".
Question: "If you could remove one single thing from the diet, what would it be?"
Doctor, "SUGAR".
This always stuck in my mind. At the time I probably thought what an odd thing to say.
Now I believe every word. Sugar is the essence of life, but added sugar in any form is probably a major disaster.Durgan

I don't disagree with you at all, Durgan. It's terrible stuff. I don't think anyone here is going to say that it's good for you.
But you know what else people don't like? Soy. Some people feel so strongly about it, that they'd like to see it controlled, too. You see where this goes?~Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.~

There is little research on nutrition. About 10% is known and the rest is anecdotal and conjecture. I am of the opinion that the evidence about sugar is almost conclusive. I am referring to added sugar in all its guises.
I am always experimenting on myself using the existing science where available, and my own limited experience with what products are available. I am looking for a relatively healthy sustainable " "fountain of Youth" if you like. Preferably a pill or like, that would satisfy all nutritional requirements.
Soy, I eat every day and have for over 40 years, and am hungry is I miss my soy for breakfast, along with a bowl of large flake rolled oats with skim milk, calcium.

I think we're doing good here, Niko. Lol. It's a civilized conversation. A bit of "back & forth", no one is personally attacking anyone. Different strokes as they say... I enjoy reading other opinions without a thread always getting the ax for a different points of view. It's a forum for the love of Pete.

I guess the big part that bothers me is gov regulation period. They could simple put out their propaganda to "educate people" with whatever they deem healthy. They did that when they decided we all needed less fat and protein but more grains, breads etc. Gee, that worked! Processed GMO breads , crackers~ oh yum ~ bleech. We all steadily got fatter!
Remember the proposed " fat tax"? I am on a Dr prescribed ketogenic high fat diet. That would have me paying extra to eat what is a healthy diet for me even though it is all whole unprocessed foods. I think the gov is not our nanny. Tax all food or tax none but dont decide what is healthy for us.~July 19 saving goal for event $104/$1000

The media hollers obesity pandemic, it must be the sugar.
It's the FDA.
It ain't the sugar, its the HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup).
HFCS is a partial grain. It sends a signal to the brain that you are not full. It causes the liver to produce more cholesterol, etc., etc.
High Fructose Corn Syrup causes normal people to become food junkies. I aught to know. I weighed 200 lbs before I figured out what was making me eat 24/7.
I've been off of it for over a year. I've lost 50 lbs without even trying. The food cravings went away.
But let me eat HFCS, even by accident and I can tell you within an hour that I've eaten it. I get this sudden overwhelming urge to eat again and again and again. It takes about 8 to 24 hrs to get out of my system, depending upon how much I've eaten.
I have to read every label before I ingest anything.
But you know what? I can eat sugar and it doesn't do that to me. Never has.
Now, yes, I can use double the sugar in my coffee for a couple fo days straight and less of it will seem "off" for awhile, but it doesn't cause me to eat incessently and it sure doesn't bring me to tears and cause me to feel hopelessly out of control like HFCS made me feel for several years.
The manufacturers have started putting it in just about everything. So, even things like collard greens have HFCS in them.

It's prudent to consume any added sugar only in moderation.
HFCS is probably a greater danger than all the other sweeteners combined. Corn sweetener is in everything. This was introduced around 1968 or around that time. But people love their processed food, so little will change. Meanwhile they will happily waddle down the aisle. Sort of like dying for their country.Durgan

Okay... I have to say something.
I am the first one to wave the "freedom of speech" papers -- but there is a line between saying something to educate, and saying something to just be hateful.
Durgan, you hate over-weight people. We got the point of the article. We may or may not agree with it. That is our choice, just as posting it was yours.
I find your digs at the over-weight people to be highly insulting, rude, hateful. I have read insult after insult.
Waddle. Seriously?
Now, I have spoken MY mind. I wasn't going to and I understand if the mods choose to remove my statement, but I stand by it.
I can't be out of money... I still have checks left!

From what I've read - an obese person has a higher risk of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer than a non-obese person. I don't believe Durgan is pointing his finger at any one person, so no one should take offence at what he says or posts. The reality is - there is an increase of healthcare costs on an AVERAGE over the lifetime of an obese person over a non-obese person. Increased health costs means increased insurance costs for everyone. No offence meant to anyone, just indisputable fact.
