Default Do you have a summer kitchen, or can you tell me what this is?

I keep seeing references to a summer kitchen. Can you tell me what this is? I'm intrigued by this.

Danielle, a summer kitchen is a building away from the main home. It was basically built in older times, so that cooking/canning etc. could be done in this building rather than heating up the main house.

We had plans to build one here, but we need to get special approval because of the size of our yard. Were not sure now whether will go ahead with it or not. We may just use the shed we built on to dh's workshop.

Is is like a screen room, or enclosed? I'm picturing something like a shed/utility room at the back of a house, but attached to the house. It's a neat idea. I don't have the room here. For now my summer kitchen is my grill on the back deck.

    Thanks, CJ.

I've heard some people also have them in their basement where it is naturally cooler.

Danielle, in every instance where I've seen summer homes, they've been seperate from the main house, meaning they are a building that stands alone. They have windows and doors, but they are screened so that they can be opened.

I have one! It's just off the kitchen- separate from the house. I don't use it for canning now- but it's great to have it. I have my freezer there, an extra fridge. . . . . .
