Default Recommendation for heirloom tomato seeds?

I'm looking to grow heirloom variety of tomatos this year, which will be new to me. Does anyone have a good seed supplier recommendation? We get heirlooms occasionally in the markets here from the local organic growers but I'm having not great luck finding seeds. I don't even know the official names of some of them but by sight. Not much help for me calling around. LOL.

Tanya, here is a link to an excellent site for heirloom tomatoes in southern california. If you click on "see available varieties" and then go to "the big list for 2005" they have lists of the types they sell, plus conditions needed and a description of the tomato.

    Good luck!

Try Seed Savers Exchange (www.seedsavers.org) They have many heirloom tomatoes listed.

We ordered two new-to-us varieties this year -- Italian Heirloom and Stupice. I'm eager to see how they do.

Wow! thanks to you both. Both sites have a wealth of information in addition to just about any variety I could want. Now I'm just left to choosing, which might take a while.

Jean, hope your new varieties are wonderful this season.

Tanya, keep us posted on the choices you make and how it works out! Southern California and Missouri are not comparable growing zones, but it will be interesting to know how your choices work for you.

I like Mr Stripeys, they're very pretty and taste fabulous. They do very well here in the heat of late summer, so they might do equally well in S. Cali, too.
