Cacti seed
DS was tempted by a packet of cacti seed in the garden center. I've never grown cacti from seed -- have any of you? Any advice?

This is a great question. I haven't ever tried to grow them from seed either.
I imagine it would be quite slow, but with not knowing maybe I'm wrong.
I found these two links. (sorry to just link an answer. I know you can google yourself)

I haven't done it either. Does the packet have instructions on it? I would imagine you'd start the seed in sand, mixed with a little potting soil. I have a few succulants but only one cactus. Let us know how you go with it, Jean.

Yes, the packet does have instructions, and it says to just seed them into a flat or pot, but I hoped someone here might have done it before.
Sara, I also thought they would probably be slow.....
We'll see, and I'll let you all know if/how this works out! Thanks for the advice!~~Jean~~

I have grown lots of cacti from seed. I used a potting soil mixed with sand. They germinated quite quickly but they do take a long time to grow. Mine are about 2 years old now and stand about an inch high. They like lots of sun preferably a south window and they like it cool at night. Be careful not to overwater them and give them a really good long dry spell in the winter.

Wonderful advice! Thanks Chriss!
I'm just thinking ahead and wondering how to handle the little seedlings. Did you sow the seed into the pot you planned to leave the plants in or did you re-pot them after germination? I'm guessing that they are small seedlings and that it would be best to sow directly into the pot.....?????~~Jean~~

I sowed mine in one of those seed starter mini greenhouses and I water it from the bottom so as to not wash out the seeds. I still have a lot of them in there. I have transplanted several as they got too big. They transplant quite easily.
