    Default Veggi Question

DH said hed help me with a few veggis if i wanna plant them....Im on bedrest (supposed to be on complete bedrest, but i have to come on and check emails lol) so hes got to do 99 percent of the work....anyway.....

I live in Texarkana Texas which is right on the line for Zone 7&8 (NorthEast Texas)

So its been warm here and I was wondering is it too late to plant any seeds? should i plant small plants instead? What grows good here? And our soil has alot of clay in it, what would grow good in that type of soil?

    Thanks so much yall.....

Not much will grow in clay, Twisti. I'd advise you to start up a compost heap so you can add lots of organic matter to your soil to break it up. Clay soils are very fertile but they clump together so much they don't allow air to get to the plant roots.

This is what I'd do. Immediately peg out an area in your garden that is contained on three sides. Start piling in all your vegetable waste from your kitchen, plus any pruning, old leaves, lawn clippings, shredded newspapers. (There is a thread here about making compost.) Ask your husband to also peg out an area where you'll have your garden. Whenn the compost is ready, it should all be added to your garden area. Dig the garden over several times to break up the soil and to mix int he compost and maybe by this time next year you'll have a good area ready for vegetables.

If you're desperate to plant this year. try container planting. You'll need some big containers, seedlings from the plant nursery and a lot of potting soil.

I'd suggest contacting your local extension agency as well. They should have someone on staff who can help you (and do soil and water testing) as well as printed materials specific to your area.
