Birds are eating me out of house & home
Anyone else having tons of birds at their feeders? For about the past month I've been having to fill a full sized feeder every other day. It's like grand central station here. There's chickadees, blue jays, nuthatches, finches, titmice, doves, cardinals, woodpeckers...I'm loving it.

Darlene, we used to have tons of birds at our feeder, too. I finally had to stop feeding them because they were causing too many problems for our pool. They still do in the spring (when the water on the winter cover melts- they seem to think it is their own personal bird spa.)
We always have tons of birds around our house because all the arbor vitaes provide good cover for them. We even had a meadow lark and an oriole recently, neither of which I have seen since I was a kid. Birds are so nice to watch- I just wish they'd stay away from the pool!!!

I hung two new feeders out at our new house about 2 weeks ago, and no birds will come
. I put out some water in a bird bath, and still nothing! I see birds, they just won't eat!

Is there shelter nearby Julie? What are you feeding them? Ours love the black oil sunflower seed. Don't worry, they will start eating soon, right now they are double dog daring each other to go take a taste.

This is why I only feed them in the winter months. I figure during spring/summer/fall they have plenty of food available.
Sounds like you have a lot of migrants --- or at least maybe they are summering in your area. We have the nuthatches, titmice, chickadees here in the winter. I'm sure they are great fun to watch.~~Jean~~

Well, one feeder is in the tree in the front yard, the other is in the flower bed in front. The birdbath is about 15 feet away from first feeder. I have black oil sunflower seeds in both feeders.
I'm just not used to this, in PA I had a million birds at all of my feeders, so my feelings are hurt!
I have one more birdfeeder to hang up, I might wait until all of the north birds come south for the winter for that one, as it is the biggest. What do you think?

Ya I'd just wait on the other one. But like I said~ don't worry, they will start eating soon, right now they are double dog daring each other to go take a taste. Hope they are there soon

My neighbor has so many feeders and I can't outfeed her, so I see tons of birds, but not so many at my own feeders. I have the same food I added in early spring and only about an inch gone from it. My thistle sock was devoured in no time though. If I didn't hang that, I wouldn't have seen any birds at my feeders this year.
We've got a creek in the back (so a water source) and plenty of trees/branches for shelter. Just next door has at least 10 feeders in all sections of her yard.If you'd like to help support Frugal Living by Sara Noel, my syndicated column, e-mail, write, or call the managing editor at your local newspaper and ask them to publish it in print or online.
