Thumbs up This homesteader's crockpot saved the day....

While other's were probably eating a cold meal or sandwiches (power was out for almost 4 hours), we were eating hot homemade soup and homemade buns.

At noon I decided to make a pot of bean soup. I had my soup simmering in the crockpot and around 2:30 the power was off and on, off and on. At 4 it went out until 7:30 p.m.

However the soup continued to cook in the crockpot because I put it to bed. I unplugged it first in case the power went back on and I covered the whole crockpot with an old wool jacket dh owns. When he came home at 6:45 everyone had a nice hot bowl of soup. Dh was so cold he had 3 bowls.

We saved on electricity, the beans cooked themselves in the pot while being kept warm from their blanket and we ate by candlelight. How about that!!

Very creative, CJ. Don't you just love it when you can give your family warm nourishing food, even when there is no power.

    Well done.

I'm glad to hear about that tip of wrapping the crockpot up and putting it "to bed". I'm sure it will come in handy!

Glad to hear you have power back on. I hope your winter blast is short lived.

CJ would you mind sharing your recipe for bean soup. I've made a few and they've been ok but I'm looking for a better recipe. Thanks!

I'm sure it was a welcome meal, while it was dark and chilly.
