Ponds?
Anyone have a pond or fountain in their yard? Did you make the pond yourself?
I dream of a nice pond someday. What's the trick to not having to use a pond liner or any filtration system?

We are in the process of putting in a pond in our yard.
We will be using a liner & filter system though, we dug the pond ourselves with a bobcat when we were having some work done on the backyard.
The pond will hold 300 gallons of water and the liner is a huge one; not the little plastic ones, but like a swimming pool only made for ponds.
If anyone has any good tips for cleaning, caring for pond & fish and good plants to use, that would be great.

We have a 800 gallon koi (Japanese carp) pond in our basement that we will be transferring to our yard next summer. My fil has 2 huge outdoor ponds. One of them uses a plastic pre-formed shape, and the other is concrete.
The plants that I suggest are a water lily, some oxygenators, parrots feather.
If you make the bottom of your pond slant down instead of flat, it will make cleaning it much easier.
If you pond is only 300 gallons, I would suggest a few goldfish or mosquito fish to keep the bugs away.
A good online resource is www.gardenweb.com and search for a forum on ponds.
Good luck

We have a pond that is made out of an old inground hottub that we have near our pool. The water didn't circulate enough to enjoy sitting in it so we decided to make it useful. We love it except that it gets too much sun. We have a bit of a problem with stringy moss. Anyway here's a link to a site that offers ideas on how to build a really cheap pond. I love reading her ideas! Enjoy!
