what was it like on the prairies in the 19th century?
This is an interesting story about life in the mid-1800s. Oh my, do we have it easy compared to these women.

I agree Rhonda, we do have it easy. When I think of my great grannie and what she had to do to survive on her homestead, it's mind boggling.
Thanks for the link.

I love the Expansion period of history in the US. There was tremendous hardship, but I like to imagine the vision these people had about creating a better life.
My great grandparents homesteaded for a time in western Kansas and my grandmother was born in their sod house. They struggled for a long time to dig a well, and their hired man in fact fell into the hole and broke his back. They cared for him for a long time afterwards. Eventually they gave up their homestead and moved back to Missouri. I suppose there are many many stories like this one.
I'm grateful that I have the conveniences available to me today. I often wonder if I would have been strong enough to be one of the women who was successful in making a life for her family out on the prairies.~~Jean~~

I've read a few books on this subject and believe these women were hero's the way they paved the way for us.
