Default Has any of you ever had you land cleared?

We have 5.1 acres with a yard area around the house and the rest is trees (alot of hardwood). We are thinking about calling one of those timber buyers to give us estimates to totally clear the remaining 4 3/4 acres. They'd come in, cut down and take the trees and pay us by the ton or linear foot on whatever they take out. Have any of you ever had this done- or know of someone who has? What do I look for in a reputable company? Do you have to pay taxes on the money you are paid?

We want to do this, because we eventually want to get a good sized garden to sell produce, as well as get animals like cows, and maybe start a Christmas tree farm (for a tax write off). There's no way is God's name we could cut the trees ourselves and try to sell it for firewood. It sounds rediculous to pay someone to do it for us, when there's buyers who will pay us a substantial amount to do it for us- and we can certainly use the money. Thanks for your help!!

My dh knows a few loggers and this is what I know.....they will come in and cut the trees, IF they feel it's worth the time.I think the trees have to be so tall and so wide. Also, they do not clean up any mess....all they want is the trees and cut limbs off and leave them.So keep in mind you'll have a huge mess to clean up once they finish.
They also come in the huge logging trucks and can leave ruts in the ground......
We had bought some land a few years ago and before we bought it,the owners had the land cleared by loggers and there were ruts everywhere!! We had very uneven ground and had to pay someone to smooth it all back out.
Now this is only what I know and from experience, where you live maybe diff. Make sure whoever you get, they have a license and have insurance

    Good Luck!
