Question Tell us about your storage area for your veggies/fruits?

We have a partial basement which is cool all the time. We store most of our veggies/fruits and canned goods there. Our potatoes are still has firm as the day we put them there.

Although the steps to the area are a bit hard to navigate, I do appreciate having a cool place to store my veggies.

We have one of those "primitive" basements under part of our house. It is quite damp so I've learned not to store my homecanned stuff there -- the lids rust. This winter we have our sweet potatoes stored in the basement, and so far so good --- except for a little bit of nibbling by some mice.

In a house we lived in several years ago, the basement actually had a root cellar with shelves for jars and other items. We kept potatoes there all winter with fairly good luck. They did end up sprouting in the late winter however.

No basements here as the ground is not stable enough for homes to have them.

I'd be interested in hearing what others in hot/tropical climates do for storing their fruits and veggies.

Kim, that is what I was wondering. I mostly just keep ours in the refrig or on the counter. If we buy too much at one time, it all goes bad before we can eat it.

We keep our fruits in the fridge as well and freeze the veggies. I would love to be able to store potatoes, but I've never had any luck in this climate. I always have to make them into twice baked potatoes or mashed potatoes and then freeze them like that.
