    Question Sides of beef?

I remember someone posting they bought a side of beef. How much is a good price for this and where did you get it? How much space is required too.

I wonder if you called your local meat locker, if they could set you up with something. We will be processing a hog in the fall. I'm not exactly sure, but it seems the hog is near $100 and the processing almost $200. Our last total was $288 for a hog. I don't know what cows are going for, but processing should be about the same.

    Question

Karen, what exactly is involved in processing?

    Just curious

I think we normally pay about $350 for a side of beef. We usually ask for a small, grain fed and it will *almost* completely fit in our smallish upright freezer. It is the very cheapest way to buy meat. You get it for say (now I'm guessing cuz I haven't looked at beef prices lately) $1.20 per pound. That includes steaks, roasts, hamburger. You also tell them how you want it processed (chele that means cut up, packaged). Like how thick you want your steaks. Dh likes his 2 inches thick! How many pounds of hamburger do you want in a package? How big do you want your roasts (1 lb., 2 lb.?)? And do you want hamburger patties. They do charge extra for that and I'm not doing that anymore. It's a great value and it saves lots of trips to the gro. store.
I don't know if you know anyone who raises beef but if you do we prefer to buy a beef from an individual and split it with someone we know. That way you can make sure it's grain fed and you might if you put your order in early be able to say no anti biotics (course it might die from an infection too!) if you wanted to.

Wow, this is so interesting. I don't know anyone that does this around here, but it sure is a good idea
