Question Any Advice on Container Gardening???

I have been seriously thinking about trying to do some container gardening on my back or front patio. I was born without a green thumb, so I am going to start SLOWLY! I have never kept a plant alive before, so I need some advice.

What is a good fruit or veggie that can be grown in containers?

I live in Southern California where it is very warm year-round. My back patio gets LOTS of hot sun and the front patio gets morning sun and afternoon shade.

I thought maybe zucchini or some type of squash would be good to start with.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

Here is a really great website that gives tons of information in regards to container gardening.

Start small and before you know it, you'll have fresh veggies. You can also do container gardening inside your home.

I've been experimenting with a very small container garden this summer to see if it's something I want to get into in a major way next year. You have to water a LOT especially if you use shallow or small pots. And you have to fertilize about every 3 weeks or so. I've had good luck with a cucumber plant and a cherry tomato plant, also the green beans did pretty well. I did not have good luck with the 2 old-fashioned tomatoes I planted, I haven't had even one tomato off these; the cherry tomato is a hybrid and it did wonderful so I think I'll stick with the hybridized tomatoes in the future.

bmiltimore, you might try some leaf lettuce on your front patio and a cherry tomato and a cucumber or squash on your back patio to start out with. These seem to be the easiest veggies to grow.

I order seeds from Pinetree Garden Seeds, they have smaller packs than most seed companies and I have always had good service from them

homestead mamma, thanks for the website; I've been trying to find more info on container gardening, thanks!

Thanks for the websites. I have a small herb container garden on my windowsill, and hope to broaden that to my fire escape next year

    Gotta love NYC!
