Default When do you order seeds?

And when do you plant them. I have never done my own seeds before. I will be planting my garden in mid may, I live in Ohio. So when do I need to start them indoors? Also if I order seeds, a pack will definitely be too many seeds, can I save them for next year? Thanks!

I start browsing for seeds in January! I usually don't order them 'til April, but I may do so earlier this year. They ran out of the yellow cosmos one year and I was bummed out! I haven't been much of an indoor seed starter until recently. I had very good luck with some pepper seeds I started indoors, and cucumbers. I think the general rule is 6-8 weeks indoors before transplanting. Usually if I use seeds I just sow directly outdoors, but I may try more varieties of tomatoes this year so I will have to start them indoors, or pay through the nose for the plants.

I think the earliest veg I plant is radish, but I can't recall when. Have to check the seed pack! I usually toss my cosmo seeds early too - just have to make sure I don't rip out the seedlings as they look an awful like a weed I get.

    Good Luck! Godspeed little seeds!

    Arrow seeds !

hello I started looking at seeds online last week of january usually I wait a bit to start up seeds on windowsill since weather is sort of changeable
and then I have seedlings but still too cold to put outside
somewhere on a garden forum someone mentioned they did a group seed buy everybody at the table each one ordered from one catalog and they shared shipping costs and split seed packets if you know some people in your own area you might consider doing something similar
seeds can be saved for next year but germination will be less varies by seed
I have saved from years and then just try see what comes up but if you want to be sure fresh seed is always best
I order my seeds from Canada www.richters.com for my herb garden
some seeds from the UK www.thompson-morgan.co.uk
on holiday when I travel I have been known to buy seeds in several countries

I placed an order for tomato and pepper plants about 2 weeks ago. I like to order early while the selection is good. They will ship when it is safe to plant in my area, usually after Mother's Day. I am in the process of ordering the seeds I want. The seeds will keep for a few years as long as they are stored well.

I will be planting spinach, peas, lettuce and radishes on St. Patrick's Day. All of these seeds are tolerant of cold soil, and I get great crops early.
