Where do you get your seeds/plants for your garden?
Forgive me if this has already been discussed, but I was wondering where you buy or order your seeds &/or plants? Thanks!

You can get free catalogs ...
Burpees & Cook's Gardens are 2 of my favorites.
You can learn about different varieties by reading
the seed catalogs.
We have a Tractor store in this area that has Ferry Merris seeds.
I like their variety & the fact that they have Heirloom seeds.
You can collect seeds off your own plants. some are easier
because of pollination differences. I collect tomato, herb, flower, cucumber & pepper seeds from my own plants.
Gardener's are usually happy to share seeds with you.
Good luck gathering seeds from a variety of sources!

I like seeds of change. they sell only organic seeds and plants; very appealing. i was able to harvest soybean and bean seeds last year. will try to do more this year. i'm going to look local this year for seeds and plants. i wrote down a few names from the yellow pages yesterday.

My Hubby just ordered his seeds from Gurney's. Most seeds he saves or someone gives him.

For tomatoes and more, check out Sandhill Preservation. GREAT prices. Huge selection. Also Tomato Growers Supply is a good one.

Well, I've ordered from Johnny's Selected Seeds in the past, as well as from Burpee. I usually buy some plants from Lowe's or Home Depot. My mother in law usually gives me some seeds, and back in October, the kids and I pulled seeds from her zinnias and marigolds. She's going to make up packets for each of them to plant in their own whiskey barrel containers.
I've been trying to convince my husband to build some "frames" so my garden would be more of a raised bed, but I keep hearing "I don't have time." lol Maybe someday!
I have vowed to plant less this year, because last year, I just couldn't keep up with the garden or the canning. *sigh* So instead of planting 8-10 rows of green beans, I'm going to plant 4-6! Instead of 24 tomato plants, I'm going to do maybe 16; instead of 16 pepper plants, I'll plant 8 and so on...

We only grow Heirloom non-genetically modified produce in our garden. We have a few sources:
1.) heirloomseedshop.com - this is our local food bank. They use the proceeds for the food bank. They are also working to teach folks how to grow their own food. Teach a man to fish so to speak.
2.) rareseeds.com - huge selection from around the world and they're located within an hour of my home.
3.) my hubby belongs to a few heirloom gardening forums and they have been swapping seeds for almost 2 years. He just told me the other day he has over 150 varieties of tomato seeds. He just has to figure out which ones to plant this year.
If you grow non-hybrids, you can save the seeds for planting again.
In regards to planting less, one thing we started doing (for the same reasons you cite) a few years ago, is rotating our canning crops. We plant a wide variety in our garden, but we only plant a lot of what we intend to can that year and we rotate every 2 years or so. We freeze a lot of our excess.Last edited by suki; 02-13-2008 at 02:07 PM.

I get a lot of my seeds and plants from a local mom and pop nursery. They have good quality and reasonable prices. I also save some of seeds from the previous years.

I always order from Pinetree Garden Seed (superseeds.com). I've always had great service. Plus they sell in smaller packets (with smaller prices!) so I don't have as many leftover seeds.

I usually get Burpee seeds from my local gardening shop/greenhouse. They sell bulk corn and beans by the scoop, also. This year I ordered a bunch of heirloom tomato seeds from TomatoFest.com. They were a little more pricey, but a great selection. If you like shopping walmart, they have good seeds as well.
HAPPY GARDENING!

From the local nursery. Up here in the mountains they supply exactly what will grow.
