    Default rooting cuttings?

    Hi All!

Can anyone tell me how to root cuttings for Rosemary. How big of a cutting from the rosemary plant do I need. Do I need to take the cutting from any specific part of the plant. Then do I put in a glass of water or do I plant in the dirt?

    thanks for the help

    Kim

"Your efforts may be more successful with newer growth. One source suggests taking 4" cuttings in late spring or autumn, trimming off the upper and lower leaves and placing the cuttings in a moist mixture of 2 parts sand and 1 part peat moss. I have simply taken a cutting, trimmed off a few bottom leaves, dipped it in a rooting compound like Rootone, and put in in my container soil.

It's been years since I've propogated rosemary this way, however. Usually the lower branches start developing roots where they touch the ground. I simply cut off the stem and move the 'transplant' (stem, roots and dirt) elsewhere in the yard or give it to friends."

Quoted from another site... hope that helps!

That was a great question. Suki - Can you do the same for other herbs?

I don't think you'd need to for most other herbs. Rosemary is more of a shrub.

It depends on the herbs... what specifically do you have in mind?

Thanks for the tips suki. One last question the Rosemary plants I have now are only 9 months old. Each plant has about 5 limbs and only one tall enough to cut off 4 inch pieces. How big/old do the plants need to be?

I'm not sure, but old enough to have enough growth on them. Maybe this fall yours will be ready... after the growing season.
