Default Gurney's catalog special and questions

I got a Gurney's catalog in the mail and they have a special buy 25.00 and get 25.00 free. It sounds like a good offer to me. I plan to get all my seeds and 6 ready to set tomato plants. Has anyone ever gotten plants like this?

I'd like to can some tomato juice from my 6 plants. I'm the only one that likes tomatoes here, and I'll only eat 3-4 a week. So, will 6 plants yield enough tomatoes to make juice? I'd like to put up at least 10 quarts but would be overjoyed to end up with more.

Thanks - I'm new to this but want to have a successful year to help out with the grocery budget.

sounds like you got a deal! It depends on the type of tomato but 6 plants should yeild quite a bit. my mom and i plant twelve tomato plants every year ( 6 amish paste and 6 roma) we get enough tomatoes to freeze and usually last us about 5 months. Towards the end of the season you can pick the green tomatoes and wrap them up in news paper and keep them in the garage to ripen.

Thanks - I guess I'll stick with 6 plants. I won't drink the juice, just use it for cooking, mostly chili and soup. I might try to make some spagetti sauce too.

How do you freeze your tomatoes?

I wash them and cut them into quarters. i use them for chili, spaghetti etc. I don't mind if there are tomato skins in my sauces.

If it were me and I did not need some special tomato plant I would buy it locally for far less and then you can get it right in the ground when it is time.

I think Gurney carries the tomato alive from the garden alive catalog now. It is WONDERFUL and really make a difference in the tomato plants I would spend my savings on it.

My Hubby orders from Gurneys. He has received his seeds already, and the plants will be shipped at the proper time for your zone. He seems happy with them.
