Default Money savings with the high cost of veggies

Dh is trying to eat healthier and of course cheaply. He usually buys a small lunch from a japanese rest. for about $3.00. He wanted to take salad to work, but when I told him the price of a bag of lettuce was almost the same or more than his Japanese take out he couldn't believe it. The price of fresh veggies has risen sharply here. I then told him I had about 14 heads of lettuce that could be picked that I grew, he was quite sceptical. I picked about 2 heads of green leaf and put it in a gallon ziplock. He called me at work and told me it was so good he would take it every day if I had it available. I left the center of the heads so it would keep growing. I am especially happy, because this is lettuce that reseeded itself from last year so cost me nothing but time.

this is making me excited for my lettuce. its already a pretty good size but not full grown yet. bagged salads especially are ridiculously expensive. glad to hear he was pleasantly surprised by the free home grown option. my dh is really looking forward to the tomatoes i have carefully been growing from seed. we dont have any flowers on the plants yet (this is my first year gardening, you can tell im pretty excited).

    Default question about picking lettuce.

OK I'm confused. How do you pick a head of lettuce and leave the head in so it regrows? I'd love to be able to do that so mine can regrow.

I"m so excited to get our veggies this year. I just got them started this weekend so it will be a while before I can harvest anything. In the meantime I'll look forward to watching them grow.

Just pluck off or cut off the larger green leaf on the outside and leave the small leaves in the center they will get larger and you can harvest them later.

    Default thanks Frugal Fannie

Thanks for explaining to me what to do with the lettuce. I have never heard of doing that before. It sounds like such a more efficient way to keep my lettuce going. I really appreciate your taking the time to respond

I started them all from seeds and planted them this weekend. I just started some cantelopes and watermelons and some cosmos from seed, and I'll plant them when they are ready!!

What type of lettuce did you plant? I bought some seeds to plant and I'm wondering if they will come back too? I have: buttercrunch and select salad bowl. Thanks.

I think I bought green leaf/ salad bowl might be the same thing. I think buttercrunch would also work. When it gets to hot the lettuce goes to seed and that is when I have to replant. I have heard swiss chard will also come back.
