    Default Glass Jar Greenhouse?

    HI All,

Was driving through Amish Country today and saw a garden where the owner has placed Quart size canning jars over what looked like lettuce. I remember my grandmother doing this. Never asked why and she's no longer around to ask. So what's the purpose. Is it to keep rabbits from eating the lettuce? does it act as a mini greenhouse, increasing the temperature? Can it suppstitute covering your plants from frost???

    Thanks
    KIm

I would imagine it works like a green house but I don't know. Interesting.

We use them as greenhouse to increase the temps when it's cold, and to protect against frost. You have to take them off during the hot part of the day - or you'll burn the plants.

It's a spinoff from glass garden cloches (bell jars) which were used to protect plants from frost, pests, wind, etc. They work well for seedlings or for plants you want to start a little earlier than you normally would. So yes, it's like a little greenhouse. Some people use plastic milk jugs.
