I'm going to start my household binder today. I didn't think I would use one that much since my husband and I don't have any children, but the more I read about it, the more ways I think of to use one! One thing I will add in mine is the gift closet list, so I always know what I've already picked up on clearance in case a birthday or holiday sneaks up on me!

Ours are color coded. The red binder the kids call the quick guide. It has all my recipes in it that are used on a daily basis. With teens, they can look up the recipe and start dinner if they need to.(lol - not that they are ever that motivated but DH uses it). It also has the household cleaning recipes, cleaning schedule, past monthly menus, and copies of our family meeting minutes (very handy when rule disputes come up). The teal one has all my clipped recipes I would like to try for special occasions. The green one has all the gardening articles and yard diagrams (what is planted where and where the power and water lines are). The blue one has all the household renovation ideas and photos/measurements of each room. We take the blue book with us to home shows and the hardware places when we start a project so everything is right there. The white binder has all the current year's school work info in it since we homeschool.

Thanks for this description. I tried a household book for awhile, but soon found it unmanageable because of the sheer number of categories. A SET of notebooks would work so much better.

How do you store these? Is it worth spending more to get the type that store "straight"? I find that I wind up with a big wedge on the shelf, things tipping all over.

    I add a few extras:

~ plastic sleeves for business cards of professionals and contractors and other businesses we use.
~ pocket pages for each budget category to house receipts.
~ a pocket page for bills to be paid.
~ an envelope for cheques and cash to be deposited at the bank.
~ a listing of all birthdays and anniversaries in the extended family.

    And...because I'm the crafty type...
~ a sample of all the fabric I have in the house stapled to pages with length, width and type beside it.
~ core recipes I make over and over again.
    ~ a master grocery list.
~ design pages for each room of the house (they contain lists of everything I want in each room...good to know if you see something on sale...)
~ and Flylady's Holiday Cruise Journal for the Christmas season.

I keep my home organization notebook in a big zippered binder with lots of pockets and some files. I also have:

    ~ stamps
    ~ address labels
    ~ stationary
    ~ cards
    ~ paper clips
    ~ pens and pencils
    ~ medication information sheets
    ~ coupons
    ~ my business cards
    ~ and a calculator

I can literally take this baby with me on vacation or in case of emergency and have it all in one place. Still need to include our financial information sheet, in case of fire or what have you.
