Default Ideas needed for Protecting carpets - HELP!

Anyone have a frugal idea to protect carpeted areas? I was thinking of trying to cover the area with carpet remnants or rugs.

I wrote this. Hope it helps.

We invested in a carpet cleaner. Helps a ton. I have rugs in all of our interior and exterior entryways and in the living and dining room. (yep our dining room is carpeted) During winter, I've had plastic runners in the entryway, too.

Thanks! We just moved, and our new apartment is wall-to-wall carpeting in every area except kitchen/bath.

I would have suggested area rugs, as well.
Also we have a take your shoes off at the back door policy-I have a shoe rack right as you come into the house and everyone in the family is still trying to get into the habit.

I also have a nice sized outdoor type rug for outside the door, and then another cheaper basic rug for inside.

We just moved in about 3 weeks ago and our den, hall & bedrooms as well as the rec. room downstairs is all carpeted.
The house we moved from only had carpet in the bedrooms.

So I'm shopping for an area rug for the den right now.
They are so expensive, but I did see the 5x7 (I believe was the size) at a KMart the other day on clearance for $37.00, these weren't carpet remnants either.
So I'm thinking of going back over there and picking one up. I *think* it might reach most of the area between the couch and loveseat, it defiantely won't be long enough, but for now, it will be better than nothing.

We found two indoor/outdoor type rugs at Lowe's for about $22 apiece. Not the most beautiful rugs, but they'll do the job.

We placed a smaller rug and a shoe rack by the door.

    Thanks for everyone's help.
