Important article- dry drowning
Folks, I just read this and honestly did not know about it. I'm sure I'm not the only one. Please take a few minutes to read it.

That's scary. I guess the best thing to do is keep an eye on your child at all times. I mean, what kid isn't tired and ready for a nap after going swimming? My heart goes out to that family.

DH and I were discussing this story after watching the Today show. It seems very hard to distinguish the symptoms from a child that is just tired after swimming, we were confused by the way the symptoms were explained. It seems more important to be watching them swim to see if they are doing a lot of choking or gagging of water because that seemed to be a main contributor. We don't watch our teenagers or their friends like a hawk in the pool if they are strong swimmers, but it doesn't seem to be something that happens to strong swimmers. This phenomenon scares me, we already seem to lose a few little ones every month to swimming pools in our state.

Thanks for bringing this to everyone's attention. It is really scary to think about. We all needed to be as informed as we can be.

Wow Russ, thanks for the info. I too think it would be hard to see the signs. What a horrible thing to have happened.

HOLY crap!
I had NEVER heard of this before either!
I know if there is a 'near' drowning, the child is hospitalized.. but WOW! Never ever thought about when one doesn't even know that it occurred. How could you know? Especially if not coughing and such.
God! that's so horrible!
My heart goes out to the family.
What a tradegy.
Russ... thanks for sharing man!

Oh, that's horrible. His first swim ever. Oh, my God.
All of the years kids came over and swam in my pool with my sons, and I never knew about this!

I saw this news story on CNN and it's pretty scary to think about. I think it's important to arm all parents with this type of information and give sign to watch out for.
Thanks so much!!

Add me to the list! I saw the story, and had never even heard the term, "dry drowning." What kid isn't exhausted after a day in the pool? It is frightening and very tragic.

wow, this is new to me too. Although, it seems like one of those things that if you show up at the emergency room and say "my child is unusually tired and irritable" they'd blow you off and you'd sit in a waiting room till your kid died anyways...I know, I'm a pessemist, but I work in the medical field so I know how trauma priority works.
