Default Perfect Kid sized hamburgers EVERY TIME!

I know alot of you folks have young kids who only eat a bite or two of their food, but let me share a little trick with you that saved me money, cooking time, and headaches at the dining room table.
When my kids were small, I learned that putting large adult sized items in front of them was overwhelming to them and I'd usually end up tossing food out..so prior to grilling hamburgers, what I would was..I would take the meat and press it down evenly in a cake pan (I always had enough to fill a cake pan!), then I would take a biscuit cutter and cut out small patty sized burgers just the right size for small kids. Once I got theirs all cut out and ready to grill, I was able to combine all the burger left in the pan and make regular sized burgers for the adults! As far as buns for their burgers, I used to make homemade rolls so I always made smaller ones in anticipation of using them for the kids, and would freeze some for later use..it worked great. Everything was minature sized and the kids would get to "decorate" their own burgers with ketchup, mustard (one liked peanutbutter on hers), or whatever they wanted..they felt very grown up and it saved me alot of cooked meat being tossed away from them not eating it!

I made mini burgers for my kids when they were little, too! I didn't make my own rolls, but used brown and serve dinner rolls.

That is a great idea, thanks! I just started making my own buns and my kids love them, but there was a lot of waste.

    Hey thats a great tip!

When I am feeling ravenous when making homemade burgers I will make med-large meatballs and squash down into a small patty shape then cook it on the grill or in the frying pan. I used dinner rolls or half of a hot dog bun as the bread and b/c I was eating two small burgers vs one regular sized I felt like I was eating a lot. I know its time to move on to the side dishes which is usually a veggie of some sort.

Or I take one regular burger patty and cut it in half and stuff into a hot dog bun. Rip it in half and voila...two smaller burgers. You should see the looks I get in the lunchroom at work when I reheat the leftovers hahahaha....but it makes you feel like you ate more then you really did. It satisfies the eyes and mind w/o over doing it. I'm going to guess that this could be good for smaller children as well.

What a great suggestion, I'll try that for my DS 6. He eats lots of small meals... he's a grazer!
