Shower curtain liners
When my shower curtain liner gets mildewy I toss it in the washing machine with a load of towels and then hang it back up rather than spend a few dollars on a new one. You can keep doing this until it rips.

I did that until one ended up in shreds, what a mess to clean up. I've switched to fabric liners that don't get mildew easily and can be washed repeatedly with no shredding.

I had a heavy plastic shower curtain that was so discoloured from mildew-I couldn't get the stains off, I pretty much tried everything.I finally got a fabric one, I like it much better

I'm interested in switching to a fabric curtain, but I also wonder if it gets wet. Do you have to have a liner?
I've heard those plastic liners are actually very toxic. That plastic smell? Supposedly not good for you. I'd love a longer lasting alternative that did not need replacing.

I use to use only a fabric shower curtain, but hated the fact that after shower I had a small swimming pool on my bathroom floor. So I pick up a plastic liner from the $ store every few months. Every few weeks once the plastic liner starts getting mildewy I spray some bathroom mold remover on it and within 5 minutes it is looking new again. I do that for a few months, then replace it.

I use a liner with my fabric shower curtain because fabric will get wet and if you are one of those folks who take showers for 15 - 20 minutes, oh yeah, it will be soaked. Believe it or not, in 7 years we've been in our house, I changed my liner twice but my fabric shower curtain is actually 9 years old. That is a bit embarassing but it still looks new! I wash both every two weeks with 1/2 cup of vinegar and tide but I never put them in the dryer.......just hang it outside.

I switched to an all fabric liner 2 weeks ago and I love it. I use the fabric shower curtain the same way I used our plastic one, position the bottom of it so that it's inside your tub (not on the outside or it will drip). I haven't had a problem with any water outside the shower. I wash my fabric shower curtain every week with the towels so no bad smells. It doesn't mildew and it doesn't have plastic chemicals that are harmful. It drys quickly, just make sure you spread it out after your shower, don't bunch it up at one end (or it might not dry quickly and might grow mildew quicker).
I am so glad that I got rid of my plastic shower liner I would suggest that everyone try this out for at least a "trial period" and you will never buy a gross plastic liner again. I didn't even go out and buy a fabric shower curtain I just used the one I had been using outside my plastic liner to "decorate" with

I do this. I also wash my cheapo vinyl tablecloths with great success. I did have to use some clear packing tape to reinforce the top of my liner but it's still hanging in there.

I have also heard that breathing the fumes from the plastic liner is really bad for you. Maybe after this one dies I will try a fabric liner again. They mildew for me as well though.

I use a hotel grade plastic liner, it has grommets on the top so it does not tear. I wash it with whites in hot water and bleach.
Tip- If you close your shower curtain after you shower and spray it down once a week with a foaming type bathroom cleaner or Lysol spray it will not mold.

I don't like the vinyl shower liners due to the chemicals and smell. I have a fabric shower curtain and a fabric liner. The shower curtain hangs outside the tub and the fabric liner inside. I wash it every week or two in the washing machine and let it hang dry. The fabric liners are quite light and airy and do dry quickly. I bought mine at Target a couple years ago for $9.99 and its still in very good shape.

I also have a fabric liner. I bleach it every couple of months.

I never thought of using a fabric liner. I am assuming that they sell a fabric curtain just for that purpose.
I may have to try a fabric liner when we move. We currently only have a shower stall, so no shower curtain for us.Julie
