Glow sticks for power outage!
Yesterday here in the midwest we had winds from Ike, my 82 year old mother's power was out for 14 hours. I took her a battery powered latern and radio but I had another idea. I had some glow stick necklaces and braclets from the $ tree. I put them on the back of her toliet and some around her bathroom sink. My daughter even put some braclets around the tp holder. My mom said that it worked wonders in the dark last night. She used a flashlight to get to the bathroom but it gave her just enough light do use the toliet and then to see to wash her hands. I think I will buy a few to keep for this purpose during winter power outages.....

What a great idea! That's much nicer than having to hold a flashlight while washing your hands.

Hiya,
We do this too when the power goes out. Also I get them for my son and his friends to play night tag.

We've done that for years! And BTW, now at Walmart in the Halloween section they have glow sticks for $.88 and 3 necklaces in a pack for $1.

Thats a great idea. Do they go bad after long storage?

Hey, that's a good idea! My DD would've loved that last night when our power was out. We lit candles and used her little flashlight. Oh, the kids also liked seeing our toddler son's toys glowing in the dark.

Would these be more durable than outside solar lights?

We keep them around as well, I also put them on the dog's collars and the cat because they are hard to see in the dark. 2 black animals can lead to a trip and hard landing in the dark!

That is a great idea. We always have some for our camper. I get them in bulk off of ebay and they have lasted 2 years without any problems.

What a great idea. And with Halloween coming up, they should be on sale 11/1 too!

Thanks!

I get mine at the Dollar Tree, when I don't order from Oriental Trading or something.

We used to buy a lot of those large sticks from a guy who ran a military surplus store. He told us to keep them in the freezer. Even if you "crack" them to light up and it hasn't died yet to put them back in the freezer and they will keep awhile longer (after pulled from the freezer later on) then they would if they were left out. But he said to always keep the unused ones still in the packages in the freezer for storage and they will stay lit longer as well (after they have thawed a bit to crack on of course lol). He was right, they did always seem to last quite a bit longer. But those were the big sticks I don't know how that would work for the necklaces/other glow thingies.
