Organic Coconut Oil Beauty Product Extrodinaire
I've been looking for an alternative to all the chemicals I use in my "beauty" regime. I looked at all the chemicals in lotion, even unscented lotion - and it's a very long list. In my search I came across Organic Virgin Coconut Oil. If anyone Googles it you'll find it has a bunch of great properties/miracle cures from weight loss, to skin conditions.
I've been trying it out for the past month (Bali Sun brand) and here's what I found. It is an amazing skin conditioner, particularly if you melt a little in your hands and rub it in after a shower. I have never had such silky skin....and it smells soooo good!!! It does not replace hand and foot lotion completely. It doesn't give that cool sensation of deep moisture I was hoping for, but it is an excellent all over light body moisturizer.
The two wonderful surprises with this product is:
1) It makes a great face moisturizer. I have combination skin. I'm at the age where wrinkles are starting but I still have acne.
I found that rather than make my skin break out as I thought an oil would, it actually makes my skin look healthier and clearer. It's supposed to have natural anti-bacterial properties. I let about an 1/8th teaspoon or less (pea size nub) melt in my hand, rub my hands together and then rub into my freshly washed face. It does need to soak in for a few minutes. I repeat if it still feels a bit dry.
2) It makes a great hair conditioner! I read somewhere that the fat in coconut oil is easily absorbed into the hair follicle. I have to agree. My hair is smooth and silky without looking greasy. The key is to apply a very small amount, I have short hair and use less than an 1/16th of a teaspoon (1/2 a pea). Once it melts in my hand, I smooth it over my clean, damp hair - starting with the ends. Then I lightly run my hands through the rest of my hair, avoiding my scalp. I don't rinse it out. I use it like an anti-frizz leave in conditioner. Less is more. Experiment slowly.
Now the important part is that it must be Organic Virgin Coconut Oil. The processed stuff has a bad rap for good reason. And it is expensive on the surface. A 473ml jar cost me about $20. For face and hair I use about 1ml each and at 4cents/ml that's pretty frugal. For body rubs its about 3-5ml, which is 12 to 20cents...but everyone needs to indulge once in while
And for something that gives me clearer, softer skin and smooth shiny hair, and is healthy for me rather than stuffed with chemicals...that's pennies I'll gladly spend!
And if you buy it and it's not for you as a beauty treatment - it's a very healthy (and delicious!) fat to eat. I cooked eggs in it, popcorn and fried rice is sooo good. I can imagine coconut shrimp would be amazing. So..it's a great natural, frugal and organic beauty product. And it's a little less frugal (you use more) but very healthy addition to cooking!

Thanks for the recommendation - I'd read some about coconut oil, but it's good to hear your experience with it.
I'm looking for an alternative to my extremely expensive Dr. Hauschka brand facial products. I've started using the face moisturizers again with the onset of the cold weather and I think I've developed an allergy!!! it must seep into the areas around my eyes, and I've been itching like crazy! I'm just starting to blame the products, but I had no idea what to try in its place. Now I do!

Let me know how it works for you. I've been using it for over a month now and my skin has never looked so good - blemish free, fades existing scars, evens tone and darkens my eyelashes (not to mention I'm soft and smell coco- nutty! )

Yep, it's a staple in the long hair world for using on the hair.
But yes, it can be used for deep conditioning before a wash or even just as a treatment to apply to your ends to keep them extra conditioned.
Also depending on your hair type, you can use it as a leave-in type product as well.
But for those of you who are considering trying it out, make sure that you are not allergic, that would not be good.
It's also great on the lips to combat dryness or sun burn.
But if you don't like the smell of coconuts, you might want to skip it, 'cause you will smell like a coconut head, that's for sure.

Ever so slowly rebuilding my stockpile...

I have to agree it's amazing on your skin, I just love it. I haven't tried it on my hair, will have to give that a try. It's also very soothing if your skin is irritated like a sunburn. I hear it helps in healing like on a cut but not sure if that's accurate. It's great as a massage oil and very yummy
