Rock Salt Storage Idea for Car
I live in New England and, as you can imagine, well we get snow- and ice! So, I was thinking about what items I should keep in my car. Obviously, I have my cell phone, a blanket, a flashlight, stuff like that. Well, I had a little "revelation". We always need rock salt! So, who wants to carry a huge amount with them? Not me! So, I thought of the perfect solution! Use one of your empty grated cheese containers. It's perfect. It has a sprinkle or pour spout and will fit just nicely inside an emergency kit.

Great Idea. I had been thinking of adding a tub of kitty litter to my trunk.

Great ideas....

We keep a few old newspapers in the car. We've used them under a tire that was slipping a time or two. You can also place a floor mat under a tire for grip, in a pinch.
I also have a kid's size snow shovel should I need to scoop-out.
I'd also suggest Mylar Emergency Blankets, not just cloth blankets. You can find them for under $2 in most sporting goods area of stores. They are about the size of a purse-size pack of tissues and intended for survival use. The thin sheets of Mylar will help retain body heat better than a blanket. You can "tent" your entire body with the Mylar Emergency Blank, so keep enough of these in your car for each person.
I also have plastic rain ponchos in the car. You can get them in the compact size. We keep a few plastic shopping bags in there as well. You can use them to cover your shoes as emergency boots so you don't get your footware wet or damaged from snow, rain, or mud.

I use a one gallon ice cream pail and a 1 cup measuring cup. Whatever you use make sure it has a tight seal or the salt will turn into one big rock. I love how we all use things differently. Great ideas.

Just got off the phone with my SIL. On their recent visit to their daughter's, it took them 7-hours to travel what is normally the last 1-hour (Interstate Highway) of the trip because of the weather. She said you'd see people get out of their cars, run down the embankment to the privacy of a bush/tree, obviously to relieve themselves.
After I hung up I immediately added a plastic container with a wide opening and a screw-on lid to the stash in the car (along with a roll of TP). Ya never know!!!
I'd rather have it, and never use it, than wish I WOULD have had it. We travel 12-hours to our daughter's....

A whistle! If you run off the road and are trapped in your car you can make noise to be found.
