Cake pan substitution.
I'm making a carrot cake out of a box. It says to use a 8 inch round pan. I don't have any round pans but I do have a 8x8 inch square pan. Can I use a square pan or will it not work out the same way? Thanks in advance.

Does the box call for just one 8 inch round pan or two? If it's a regular cake mix, I think there would be too much batter for one 8x8 but if you have 2, it should work unless it calls for just one round pan and then you will be good to go with one 8x8.
ETA: If you only have one 8x8, you can bake one and put the extra batter in the fridge, then after the baked 8x8 has cooled, you can bake the rest of the batter.Last edited by nancycg56; 01-12-2009 at 02:01 PM. Reason: Adding some info

I think you will be okay to use that pan......I am a home based baker, and use the same pans all the time.
Hope that helps!

Here are a couple charts that will help you out when making substitutions and good to have printed out in a file for future reference:

An 8-inch square pan holds 6-cups of batter while an 8x1-inch round cake pan only holds 4-cups of batter.Last edited by Grainlady; 01-12-2009 at 03:24 PM.
