    Default Another kitchen tip

I have a big thick-walled jar I keep filled with water (and if I do it dish soap, if DH does it -- just water) but that's where all our dirty forks, knives, spoons, etc. go as they get dirty. You can also use something rectangular and have the stuff lie flat, but this is what I had. The technique of soaking silver is common in cafeterias, or at least that's where I learned it.! It really makes it much easier to clean the utensils and you don't put your hand in the dish water and cut yourself puling out a knife this way!

Dishes are hand washed once a day after dinner, so I really like this tip. I'll give it a try, thanks!

Great tip..when we move into our home (next month) that has a dishwasher I'm going to try this..I will also seperate and put all the forks in one slot all the knifes in another slot you get the point...that way instead of having to seperate them I can just take them out and put them away..

I sort the silverware as I put it in the rack too. In fact a few months ago I started not just sorting it but putting the larger forks, knives, and spoons handle UP in the slots and the smaller stuff handles DOWN. This means when I pull the silver out of the drainer, it's already sorted by size and type. Saves me a bunch o' time. I figured this was my being obscessive and no one else would be interested. Since I ran a commercial dishroom for about 2 years, I am used to washing and sorting dishes quickly.

Glad the jar idea is helpful! JD

I like to mix my silverware up in the dishwasher silverware holder so they don't nest together. This is especially necessary for spoons. When spoons nest they don't get clean. When the bottom of the silverware holder fills up, I start putting things in upright (not everything--not sharp knives, for example) so things aren't so crowded that they don't get clean. I have certain serving spoons that rarely come clean if I don't stand them upright.

I also don't run the dishwasher every day, so I do usually soak my silverware for a while before I put them in the dishwasher. I usually put them in whatever bowl or plate is sitting in the sink at the time, then later take them out, rinse quick & put them in the dishwasher.

A few drops of Clorox will help keep them sanitized too. Just add a few drops to the water in the bottle.

Great tip, even though I have a dishwasher sometimes pieces of the silverware doesn't come clean, soaking it would sure help.

Great tip and I think I have just the container to use. I do have a dishwasher but sometimes the forks and other utensils get stuck on food that I have to clean some off before putting in the dish washer and this would save that chore.

We do this with whatever glass or mug ends up in the sink first. Works great!
