    Here's my ...

I have a really good friend who just finished the "starvation diet," where she lost 78 lbs... After 9 months, she's eating ONE 300-500 calorie meal per day. She's "scared of food" (her words, not mine). She justified doing it by saying "a doctor is monitoring me," etc. For the first 4 months, my husband (her pastor) and I would try to talk to her and ask how she was doing, etc. - we were VERY concerned about all of the changes (emotional/mental) we saw. She just dismissed us "you don't know...this is what I have to do, it's safe," etc.

We watched her go from being a normal, outgoing, sweet woman to someone who is paranoid about even being around food. During the diet, she had to take a diet pill - adapax or something - but it has several longterm side effects, the most prominent of which is heart damage. It's been difficult watching her change (although her body from the neck down is FABULOUS!) - her skin is sallow and her eyes are sunken, not to mention the obvious mental health problem she now has.

I talked to my doctor about this very diet about 2 months after she started - before I knew about the pills - and my doctor told me all about it. She said it was very dangerous and I should do Weight Watchers instead. So, that's what I've done. 7 months = 30 lb. loss for me and I've learned to make better choices and can eat with my family.

Thought I'd share my (somewhat) personal experience with the "starvation diet."

I am curious, Skysoldier, why you would join a website with its main emphasis on Frugality and then only post 'cut and paste' posts regarding health? Yeah, I know there is a forum dedicated to health on this website, there are a lot of forums on here not specific to frugality. You really stand out as not posting in any other forum, not being part of the community. Why don't you come on over and share some of your stories, your insight, your thoughts with us on the other forums?

Strict dieting can often jumpstart an eating disorder. Sorry about your friend.
