Dishwasher soap works great
I have tried this and it does work great.I use the generic tang, works just as good.I buy my salt, baking soda and the orange mix at aldis for less then $2.25 .It goes a long way.
1 Cup salt
~2 Cups baking soda (the kind you cook with, not washing soda)
~ 2 Cups borax (keep out of reach of children.)
~2 Cups Orange Tang (yes, the stuff we drank in the 70's!)
Mix all together and store in an air tight jar. Use 1 Tablespoon in each compartment and wash normally. If you have hard water, you might want to increase the amount to 2-3 Tablespoons and add white vinegar to the rinse compartment. If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal. Not to
people or things.

It's the citric acid in Tang that is the key ingredient.
I purchase citric acid (8-pounds) at a time for $18.25 from http://www.soapmakingsuppliesstore.c...cid-p-557.html (smaller amounts also available) to use in my bath bombs, and citric acid is also available from most health food stores, but it's cheaper from the source above.
Homemade Dishwasher Powder
1 cup Borax
1 cup bi-carb soda (baking soda)
1/4 cup salt
1/4 cup citric acid

I had made my own detergent and it didn't work so well, but the missing ingredient was the citric acid. I may give this another go! Thanks

Neat idea. Will have to keep it for when I run out of detergent.
Citric acid is also available very cheap at wine making stores. They sell it in any amt. you want.

~Does anyone else have(or care to calculate) a complete price rundown by the cup? I know there are other considerations than just whether or not it's cheaper than store bought but this is a frugal site after all. :-)
OP, you meant that you get all your ingredients except borax for $2.25 right? So that makes your cost per cup $.31 without borax? Interesting. How much is borax and where do you get it?~Last edited by nuisance26; 06-24-2009 at 09:07 AM.
