I'm so glad the question was posted. I take my son dinner to work most nights. I just make a plate of whatever we ate for dinner. This will be a great way of feeding him on those days where it's snowing, or stormy, or if I'm under the weather. I'll just send him with a thermos of hot dogs. Brillant!!!!

Just to add, I send all kinds of stuff with my kids in little stainless thermos'. Hot dogs, corn dogs, fish, chicken nuggets, casserole, mac&cheese and the favorite mashed potatoes&gravy. I just pre-heat the thermos with boiling water, dump it and dry it out and add the hot food.

Glad that thermoses are coming back into vogue - could send chili in the thermos and a container of rice in the lunch box - mix together for lunch - yummy!!

I've sent my husband pasta to work. I've made myself ramen soup, the noodles swell but their still good. My youngest always took a hot lunch in a thermos for all homeschool trips and co-op days. It was always soup or a meat, vegetable & a 1/2 whole grain starch (not wheat). He's on a special medical diet. Everything stayed at least warm and was not mushy or soggy. Never did anything breaded though.

I really have no idea since I didn't eat it. They eat them all though so they must not be too terrible. I asked them and they just sort of stared at me and said they taste fine.

We use the food jars, too. No water needed and food stays hot. My kids have never mentioned their nuggets being soggy and I know they would if it happened. They have lunch early (before noon) and don't leave for school until 8:15am, so not sure how it would be if lunch was later. But I can vouch for 3 hrs and it's still hot. LOL If I remember correctly it's supposed to keep food hot for 5 hours.

I work with someone that puts a hotdog down in their tomato soup then removes the hotdog to a bun. They say it's good and hot.

Packing a healthy school lunch for your little one can be challenging - especially during those rushed mornings when everything seems to go wrong. If you give in and let them eat hot dogs and chocolate cake for a one day, you can look forward to endless days of begging for the same meal again. Preparation helps you stay strong in the face of time constraints and pleading eyes.

That is why I always make it a point to prepare ahead. Small plastic containers are ideal for school lunches. I fill them up, and they are all set to be frozen or stacked in the fridge, ready to grab at a moment's notice. Also choose one day of the week to prepare lunches and snacks. Make enough for the next seven days. Stock them in the freezer.
