    Default Freezing Avocodos

I bought a bunch of avocodos on sale this week. I got them for about .10 each. I've heard they can be frozen but I'm not sure how to go about it. Does anyone know? I guess they are good for guacamole after they are frozen?
    Thanks,
    Kris

First, wish I could find some for that price. If ours get down to 2 for $1, I have to have at least a couple.

Will be watching this thread as I would like to know how to freeze them and how they turn out AFTER being frozen.

You would have to do something to keep them from turning black......like freeze them in lemon juice or something.....wouldn't you?

I found this by Googling "freezing avocados".

    Freezing Avocadoes

You can freeze mashed fresh, ripe avocados if you want to have an "emergency supply" of avocados on hand for guacamole.

To freeze, mash the avocados with a fork. Add one teaspoon lime or lemon juice per avocado and mix well. The best way to freeze the prepared mashed avocados is to use a freeze-weight zip lock bag. Fill the bag with the mashed avocado. Remove the air from the bag and then zip closed and freeze.

Thaw the frozen avocados in the refrigerator or place the container in a bowl of cool water to accelerate thawing.

Still not convinced it won't be just BLACK GOO when you unthaw it.....hope someone posts that has ACTUALLY done this. Any part that didn't have the lemon/lime protection on it would be black....UGH!

Between adding lemon juice and removing air from the Ziploc you should be okay. I have a foodsaver and I have vacuum sealed partial avocados and put in fridge for several day without lemon juice and they have been fine.

~I was just thinking this same thing this weekend so I froze a few leftover avocado pieces with no lemon or lime juice.
Here's what they look like after 3 days in the freezer, untreated.

I think they'd be ok for guacamole but I'll definitely be mashing the remainder of my avocado with lime juice before freezing just to be sure.~

As far as the price goes Safeway had them on sale for .68 each and I had .55/2 winetags and in my area they double up to .50 so .68 x 2 = 1.36 - .55/2 = .81 for 2. then the double of .50 = .31 for 2 avocodos. But Mine rang up wrong so I got one free and the rest at the sale price so it ended up being about .10 each when all was said and done.

So I mashed them all up and added lemon juice. They look good but we'll see how they look when they are defrosted.

    Thanks all!

For me I would never freeze them. I know there has been some info about keeping the seed in them if cut to last longer in the fridge. I really wish avocodos wasn't so testy because I would buy a million at a time and live off them.

My favorite thing to use avocados in is soup. It's a lettuce soup with avocado that adds heft and the mouth feel/fats. If avocados were that cheap, I'd make up some soup and then freeze that! I got the soup recipe out of one of my favorite books, Ten Minute Cuisine by Green & ?.

I NEED to know if this will work. My tree is going to be producing avocados again and I have to take advantage of the free food when I can!

I am freezing a batch of guacamole' as we speak. I hope this doesn't ruin it, but I suppose it's the only way to find out about the texture.

I buy avocados to use for guacamole - it's just the mashed avocado flesh that's been treated so it doesn't turn black packaged in a vacuum sealed bag - and it freezes well.
