Did you know?
That you can use steel wool and a 9V battery to start a fire?
I was watching Apocalypse Man the other night and he showed how to pull apart the steel wool and touch the "plug" ends of the 9V battery to it & it just lights up. You can then add paper, kindling, whatever to keep the fire going.
It's called the Joule effect. I thought that was pretty cool!

I didn't, but my DH did. I think he is the original Jeremiah Johnson (mountain man).

He drives me nuts because he tells me what Bear Grylls and guys like that are gonna do, before they do it.
We took our kids out of Cub Scouts because their dad had already taught them (whilst we were camping) everything the cub scouts were teaching them. Their schedules were too full anyway.
My DH says it's easier--for him--to carry a magnesium strip and his pocketknife in his pocket all the time. He runs the knife down the strip to make sparks.______

I didn't... but of course the Old Man does. I swear, if it's flammable or combustible, he's all over it!
I can't be out of money... I still have checks left!

I saw that show. I've just got to try it. One thing he mentioned was to store the battery and steel wool separately.

I saw that on a kids survival show The teens had a hard time getting the steel wool to light. Not sure they ever did.
I saw the same light the steel wool trick done on another show with a car battery and steel wool they just clipped the battery cables on the steel wool hetaed up and caught the tender on fire.
